Roof rats, Norway rats and pack rats

Rat control and rat removal in Prescott, AZ

Rats are less common than mice around Prescott, but when they get into a home, garage or business they do more damage, faster. We identify which rat you have, remove them and seal the way in.

Which rat do you have?

Three kinds of rats get into buildings in Arizona, and each behaves differently. Knowing which one you have decides where we look and how we seal.

Around Prescott, pack rats are the ones we see most often. Roof rats and Norway rats are more common in warmer, urban areas, but any rat that finds food and shelter can move in. Food businesses are especially exposed, which is why we also offer restaurant rodent control.

Signs of rats

  • Droppings larger than mouse droppings, roughly half an inch or longer
  • Gnaw marks on wood, wiring, plastic pipes or stored boxes
  • Dark grease marks along walls, beams or pipes
  • Heavier scratching or thumping in the attic or walls at night
  • Burrows along foundations, slabs or woodpiles
  • Chewed fruit, pet food or bird seed left outside

  • Trapping and removal inside the home or building
  • Locked, tamper-resistant stations outside where appropriate

Roof rats, Norway rats and pack rats

Three different animals with three different habits. Here is how to tell them apart.

Roof rats

Slender and dark, with a tail longer than the head and body. Good climbers that nest high, in attics, roofs, trees and vines, and travel along utility lines and fences.

Norway rats

Larger and heavier, with a shorter tail. Burrowers that nest low, under slabs, in crawl spaces, woodpiles and along foundations.

Pack rats (woodrats)

Native to the Prescott area, with a furry tail, large ears and a white belly. They build stick nests under decks, in sheds and in engine bays. See our pack rat removal page.

Rat control questions

Don’t see your question? Call and ask. We’re happy to talk it through.

Rat droppings are much bigger, roughly half an inch or longer, and the noises are heavier. Gnaw marks are larger too. If you are not sure, the inspection will tell you.

Roof rats are well established in the Phoenix area and do best in warm places. They are less common in Prescott’s colder climate, but whatever rat you have, the fix is the same: find the way in and seal it.

We avoid poison baits inside homes and buildings. Outside, if bait is needed, we use locked, tamper-resistant stations placed away from children and pets.

It depends on the species, how many rats there are and how much sealing is needed. The inspection is free and you get a written quote first.

Yes. In Arizona, rodent control done for hire is regulated by the Arizona Department of Agriculture’s Pest Management Division. It is always worth asking any provider for their license.
