Why cleanup matters after rodents

Droppings and urine soak into insulation and hold odor for a long time. The scent also tells other rodents that your attic is a good place to nest.

And if deer mice were involved, the dust from their droppings can carry hantavirus. That is not something to sweep up yourself.

Signs your attic needs cleanup

  • Droppings on insulation, beams or stored boxes
  • Flattened or tunneled insulation
  • A strong ammonia or musty smell
  • Stains on ceilings below the attic
  • Nests of shredded paper, fabric or insulation
  • Rooms below the attic that are harder to keep warm

What our attic cleanup includes

Why we never sweep or vacuum droppings

Dry sweeping or vacuuming rodent droppings can put particles in the air you breathe. The CDC recommends a wet-cleaning method instead, and that is what we follow.

Air it out first

The space is ventilated before cleanup starts, and our crew wears gloves and respiratory protection.

Soak, then wipe

Droppings and urine are soaked with disinfectant, left for several minutes, then wiped up and bagged. Nothing is swept.

Remove what can’t be cleaned

Insulation soaked with urine or full of droppings is bagged and removed, then replaced once the area is clean.

How attic cleanup works

Inspect & seal

We confirm the rodents are gone and seal the entry points so the clean attic stays clean.

Remove

We bag and remove droppings, nests and contaminated insulation using wet-cleaning methods.

Disinfect

We disinfect beams, surfaces and the attic floor and treat lingering odor.

Restore

We replace insulation where it was removed and show you photos of the finished work.

Attic cleanup questions

Don’t see your question? Call and ask. We’re happy to talk it through.

Not always. Light contamination can often be cleaned. Insulation that is soaked with urine, heavily soiled or tunneled through usually needs to come out. We tell you which after the inspection.

Yes. Cleaning an attic that rodents can still get into is wasted money. We remove the rodents and seal entry points first.

It depends on the size of the attic and how much insulation needs replacing. Many jobs take one to two days. You get a time estimate with your quote.

For a few droppings, follow the CDC method: air out the space, wear gloves, soak droppings with disinfectant, then wipe them up. Never sweep or vacuum. For attics, crawl spaces or heavy contamination, call a professional.

Yes. Crawl spaces get the same inspection, sealing, cleanup and disinfection as attics.
