Signs you have mice

Mice are active at night and good at staying out of sight. Most people notice what they leave behind before they ever see one.

Once you see one mouse in daylight, there are usually many more nesting nearby. If you manage rentals, see our rodent control for property managers.

What to look for

  • Small droppings, about the size of a grain of rice, in drawers, cabinets or along walls
  • Scratching in walls or ceilings at night
  • Chewed food packaging in the pantry
  • Shredded paper, fabric or insulation
  • Dark grease marks along baseboards
  • Pets staring at or pawing at walls and appliances

House mice vs. deer mice

Prescott homeowners mostly deal with two kinds of mice. Knowing which one you have changes how careful you need to be with cleanup.

House mice

Gray-brown with a mostly single-colored tail. They live close to people, nest in walls, cabinets and appliances, and breed quickly when food is easy to find.

Deer mice

Brown on top with a white belly and a sharply two-toned tail. Common near open land and forest edges around Prescott, they nest in garages, sheds, cabins and crawl spaces.

Why it matters

Deer mice can carry hantavirus, which spreads through dust from their droppings and urine. If you suspect deer mice, don’t sweep or vacuum droppings. Call us instead.

How we get rid of mice

Inspect

We find where mice are nesting, how they get in and which areas need cleanup.

Remove

We set enclosed traps in the right places and check them on follow-up visits.

Seal

We close the gaps they use so new mice can’t replace the ones we remove.

Confirm

We keep checking until there is no new activity, then clean up what they left behind.

Mouse control questions

Don’t see your question? Call and ask. We’re happy to talk it through.

Prescott nights start dropping below freezing in fall, and mice look for warm shelter. Gaps that were harmless all summer suddenly become their way in.

They contaminate food and surfaces, chew wiring and damage insulation. Deer mice can also carry hantavirus, so droppings need to be cleaned up carefully.

We avoid poison baits indoors. A mouse that eats bait can die inside a wall and cause an odor problem. Inside, we use enclosed traps.

It depends on how many mice there are, how many entry points need sealing and whether cleanup is needed. The inspection is free and you get a written price first.

Not if the entry points are sealed. That is why every mouse control job includes finding and closing the gaps, not just trapping.
